rug(s) into our facilities and speak to one of our rug appraisal experts. If you require a written
appraisal for insurance or other purposes, we also provide professional written rug appraisals for a $150 fee.

Use a non-slip rug pad underneath. This also adds cushioning and extends the rug's life.

Roll the rug in reverse for a day or two. Use a rug pad to secure it flat. Iron on low heat with a damp cloth if necessary.

Rotate the rug every few months to even out sun exposure. Use UV-blocking window treatments or place rugs in shaded areas.

Indoor rugs are softer and designed for comfort, while outdoor rugs are made from weather resistant materials like polypropylene.

Yes, a rug under the bed adds warmth and ties the room together. Make sure it extends beyond the sides and foot for a balanced look.

Avoid DIY cleaning; consult a professional experienced in antique rug care. Use rug pads to reduce stress on delicate fibers and rotate periodically.

Yes, polypropylene and other synthetics are more fade-resistant than natural fibers like wool.

Yes, for most rugs, shedding reduces over time as loose fibers are removed.

Long Term Rug Storage WrappingYes. While we don’t offer long-term storage at our facilities, we do offer long-term rug storage wrapping services. If you’re planning on storing your rug for longer than a few days, you’ll want to wrap it for long-term storage. This helps to prevent rug mold and damage and protects the rug from humidity, moisture, UV rays, dust, and pests.

Rugs have a "nap," which refers to the direction the fibers lie on the rug's surface. In hand-knotted rugs, the nap lies in a single direction. This means the rug's color can appear more saturated or faded depending on the viewing angle.

We are committed to customer satisfaction. If you are not happy with our service, please contact us as soon as possible so we can address the issue. If you are dissatisfied with your rug cleaning, we will re-clean it if necessary. We guarantee our work and value your satisfaction.

Typically we don’t collect payment until you come to pick up or we deliver your serviced rugs. If you wish to pay in advance, just let us know and we can accommodate your needs.

Rugs are made from a variety of materials, including natural fibers like silk, cotton, wool, and jute, and synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, rayon, and polypropylene. Synthetic fibers offer greater resistance to stains and abrasion compared to natural fibers.

It's not suggested. Layering rugs on carpet can create ripples and movement. The use of Wonderlok rug pad will assist with the issue but may not alleviate it completely,

The 18” rug rule states that an area rug should be placed at least 18 inches away from the walls or baseboards in any room. This ensures the rug neither overwhelms the space by covering too much of the floor nor appears too small by leaving excessive floor exposed.

Moth LarvaeThe presence of small worms in a rug often signals an infestation of pests, such as carpet moths, millipedes,

Moth eggs

sowbugs, or clothes moths. Carpet moths are particularly problematic, as they can lay up to 200 eggs on rug fibers, resulting in larvae that can damage rugs and spread to other textiles in your home, including bedding and clothing. To prevent further infestation, please contact us before bringing any potentially infested rugs to our facility for treatment. This allows us to take the necessary precautions to prevent an outbreak on our
premises.

Carpet moths lay their eggs on natural fibers like wool and silk. These small, white eggs are often difficult to see. However, the larvae (moth larvae) are more easily identifiable: they are small, cream-colored worms that may be seen crawling on fabric surfaces. Regular carpet cleaning can help remove these larvae.

Many variables determine how long a rug will last on average. Some of the variables are if the rug is machine-made or hand-knotted, rug construction quality, foot traffic, frequency and quality of rug cleaning & maintenance, the type of material the rug is made of, the environment & climate the rug will be in, etc. On average a synthetic, machine-made rug will last on average 5-20
years and almost always depreciate whereas, hand-knotted wool rugs last an average of 10-100+ years and frequently increase in value over time.

Machine-woven rugs are produced on mechanical looms, interlacing yarns to create either a flat or raised pile. Often made with durable synthetic fibers like nylon, they offer greater resistance to wear than some hand-woven constructions. Their quality and durability make them a worthwhile investment.

Tufted rugs, often soft and plush-like shag styles, are created by inserting yarn loops through a backing material, either by hand or with a tufting gun. A non-slip backing is then applied to secure the tufts. This construction allows for textured or patterned designs through variations in pile height. While tufted rugs are generally easier to produce than woven rugs, they perform best in low-traffic areas.

Printed rugs are created by applying colored dyes to a rug base, and then setting the design with steam and heat. This process makes them a more affordable option, offering flexibility for those who frequently update their décor to reflect current trends.

Hand-knotted rugs are meticulously crafted by artisans on specialized looms, where individual knots are tied to warp threads, creating the rug's pile and intricate designs. This labor-intensive process, involving weft threads and careful finishing, results in a unique and durable textile that can last for generations. Their artistry, high-quality materials (often wool or silk), and robust construction make them a worthwhile investment with the potential for appreciation, offering a luxurious feel and one-of-a-kind aesthetic. However, the high cost, long production time, need for professional cleaning, and potential for slight variations in appearance due to their handmade nature are important considerations for potential buyers.

Navajo rugs, woven by Navajo weavers on upright looms, are distinctive textiles known for their geometric patterns, vibrant colors (traditionally derived from natural dyes), and tight weaves. Created using hand-spun wool from Navajo-Churro sheep, these rugs embody cultural heritage and skilled craftsmanship, often incorporating symbolic designs passed down through generations. Their tight weave and durable wool make them long-lasting and suitable for both floor coverings and wall hangings, adding warmth and artistic value to a space. However, authentic Navajo rugs can be expensive due to the time-intensive weaving process and the
quality of materials and require specialized care to maintain their integrity. While their unique artistry and cultural significance make them highly desirable, the cost and care requirements are important factors for potential buyers.

Flatweave rugs are created on a loom using a less labor-intensive weaving process than pile rugs. Typically made from wool or cotton, their interwoven structure results in a flat, thin profile. This reversible design makes them a versatile choice for various décor styles.

You should always roll a rug if possible to prevent lines and creases from forming in the rug and to prevent the rug from becoming damaged over time. It is OK to fold a rug for a short period of time (few hours) but it should not be left folded long term.

The amount of time to get your rugs serviced depends on several factors including the type of services you have requested, the number of services being completed on a rug, and the condition of the rug (some rugs require re-treatment) just to name a few. We always strive to complete rug services promptly but we refuse to skip on quality for the sake of expediency. For some services, we offer a "Rush" option for an additional small fee that can reduce the turn-around time if you must have your rugs returned by a specific date. Our average turn-around times are below but in some cases, the amount of time needed may be slightly longer or shorter than the average.

Absolutely! To protect your rugs during transit, we always roll and wrap the rugs in high quality plastic wrap. This will help prevent new soil or stains on your rugs while they're on their ride home. However, we highly recommend that as soon as you are home, you remove the protective plastic wrap and unroll your rugs. While we strive to remove 100% of the moisture from a rug prior to wrapping, depending on several variable factors such as rug thickness, fibers, density, etc. some residual moisture may remain in the rug. By unwrapping and unrolling the rug, you allow it to breath which will help prevent issues such as mold, or odors.

Rug Cleaning, Care & Maintenance Icon

Rug Cleaning, Care & Maintenance

Yes, we specialize in cleaning museum-quality, heirloom, high-end, hand-knotted, and silk rugs. Each rug is unique, so the cleaning process is tailored to its specific needs. After a thorough inspection by our rug cleaning experts, we create a customized cleaning plan to ensure the best results while safeguarding your rug against damage.

Expert rug odor & stain removal expertsOur prices are calculated based on the square footage of the rug, the material the rug is constructed from, and whether the rug is damaged or wet. We offer a $1.50 per square foot discount for customers who choose to drop their rugs off for cleaning vs. requiring pickup & delivery service.

Moth LarvaeFor a nominal fee, we provide rug protection treatment and moth-inhibiting treatments to safeguard your valuableRug Wine Stain Experts rugs. Our protection treatment enhances stain resistance and extends the time between professional cleanings.

Additionally, our moth-proofing treatment helps prevent moth infestations, protecting your rugs from damage. If you are planning on storing your rugs long-term, we highly recommend both treatments before placing them in storage.

No oxyclean on rugsNO! You should NEVER use oxygenated products on your rugs. Rug fibers can have a negative chemical reaction and the cleaning product will permanently bleach or whiten the rug. If you’re unsure about cleaning your rug yourself, we highly recommend you take it to a rug cleaning professional. Even if you choose a rug cleaner other than us.

Professional Rug SanitizationRugs over time accumulate a lot of nasty things like bacteria, dead skin cells, pollen, viruses, parasites, and potentially harmful bacteria like E. coli, Staphylococcus, and Salmonella can thrive in carpets, often due to foot traffic, food spills, and pet activity. Dirty rugs can be a health hazard. On average, carpets can contain up to 200,000 bacteria per square inch—exceeding the levels found on toilet seats. In homes with pets, the bacteria count can be even higher. How often you should clean them depends on several variable factors such as foot traffic volume, type of foot traffic, pets, amount of dust in the home, rug material, children, and location of rug (bathrooms & kitchens tend to get dirtier faster). We recommend cleaning your rugs every 12-18 months on average. If you have other contributing factors such as high-traffic areas, pets, etc., we recommend more frequent cleaning between 9-12 months.

Yes. We use a proprietary multi-stage cleaning process that sanitizes, conditions, and deodorizes your rugs. We also use a professional stain removal process to remove any residual stains.

Pet Stain & Damage Specialists

Vacuum regularly (at least once a week for low-traffic areas; more often for high-traffic zones).

Only small, lightweight rugs (e.g., cotton or synthetic) labeled "machine washable" can be safely machine-washed. Avoid washing wool, silk, or hand-knotted rugs this way.

Vacuum thoroughly and shake the rug outdoors if possible. Consider using a HEPA filter vacuum or professional cleaning for deeper allergen removal.

Remove the rug immediately to dry. Use a wet-dry vacuum to siphon as much water out of the rug fibers as possible. Lay it flat and use fans or a dehumidifier to speed up drying. Reach out to us to have the rug professionally cleaned.

Use a vacuum with a brush attachment designed for pet hair. Rubber brooms or lint rollers are also effective for manual removal.

Some shedding is normal for new rugs, especially wool. Vacuum gently with a brushless attachment. Avoid over-vacuuming and choose high-quality rugs to minimize shedding.

Regularly clean the rug and use moth deterrents like cedar blocks, Have your rugs moth-proof or VECTRA treated after each cleaning.

Small frays can be trimmed and sealed with fabric glue. For extensive damage, consult a professional rug repair service.

Flatten curled edges by dampening them slightly and placing heavy books or furniture on top until they settle.

No, we do our best to remove all moisture from a rug after cleaning but inevitably some moisture sometimes remains. This moisture can cause mold on the rug if the rug is not unrolled and allowed to breathe. We recommend you unwrap your cleaned rug within a couple of days of getting it back home. If this isn’t possible, store the wrapped rug in a cool, dry location until it can be unwrapped. If
you need to store your rug long-term, we recommend you purchase our long-term storage rug wrapping service.

Use a lower suction setting for delicate rugs and avoid vacuums with beater bars on shag or high pile rugs.

Yes, vacuum the rug's underside every few months to remove trapped dirt and debris.

No, the fringe may become lodged in the vacuum or the vacuum may rip the fringe from the rug. Fringe should only be professionally cleaned to avoid damaging the rug.

Yes, but avoid direct sunlight for long periods to prevent fading. Place the rug flat to avoid warping.

Place rugs in less accessible areas or use pet-friendly stain-resistant rugs. If the pet is still receiving house training, roll up the rug and store it until house training is over.

Rug & Rug Padding Sales Icon

Rug Sales & Rug Padding

Rug PaddingThe primary difference between Wonder-Lock (WunderLock) and Rug-Stop padding lies in their intended use. Wonder-Lock padding is designed for rugs placed on top of carpet and is a sticky pad meaning it will stick to the underlying carpet. It assists with slipping but is thinner than Rug-Stop padding. It will need to be professionally applied for best results.

Wunder Lock is a thin white felt coated with a dry adhesive that won’t transfer to a carpet. It works exceptionally well to hold small rugs in place and in some cases can be used under larger rugs. It can be placed and moved several times without losing tack.

WunderLock is the premium product used for rugs on carpets to hold any rug on any carpet. Especially ideal for lightweight rugs, dhurries, and high-traffic areas. WunderLock is manufactured with a special "dry" adhesive that is nontransferable. WunderLock is washable, and foil backed for easier installation.

Rug-Stop padding is ideal for rugs on hard flooring such as wood or tile but can also be used on carpets or on top of other rugs. It not only prevents slipping but also adds cushion. In addition, Rug-Stop rug padding has a foam rubber backing that helps prevent spills from leaking onto the underlying surface and a 1/4" thick felt top. It does not require professional installation.

In general, rug padding extends the life of your rug, prevents slippage, and protects the underlying carpet or floor from spills, scratches and stains. Rug-Stop rug padding is our most popular selling rug padding product and tends to be a little more multi-purpose. Our padding is charged by the square yard and we custom-cut the rug pad to your specific rug size at no additional charge. We also offer installation services for customers purchasing our Wonderlock Rug Pad product.

Yes, for a nominal fee, we will deliver the rug to your home, move smaller pieces of furniture, and lay out the rug in the location of your choosing.

High-End Collectible Heirloom Area Floor Rugs for Sale

We occasionally purchase used rugs, depending on the rug and current market conditions. If you're interested in selling your rug to us, please call us first to confirm whether we are currently in the market to buy new rugs before bringing them to our facility.

Yes. We offer a limited-period refund policy on our rug sales. There is a restocking fee if you purchase a rug and later decide to return it for a refund. Please see our Rug Sales Policy for additional information.

Fine Area Rugs & Flooring ProductsFor living room rugs: The rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of all furniture to rest on it.

For dining room rugs: Choose a rug large enough to accommodate the table and chairs, leaving 24-30 inches on all sides.

For bedroom rugs: Place a rug under the bed, extending 18-24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed.

Durable materials like wool or nylon, are ideal for high-traffic areas. Flat-weave rugs and low-pile designs work well as they resist wear.

Polypropylene and other synthetic materials are the easiest to clean. Wool is also naturally stain resistant but may require professional cleaning for tough stains.

  • Hand-knotted rugs: Made by hand with superior craftsmanship; durable and expensive.
  • Hand-tufted rugs: Faster to produce and less costly, but less durable.
  • Machine-made rugs: Mass-produced, affordable, and suitable for temporary use.

Machine-made rugs start at $50-$300. Hand-tufted rugs cost $300-$1,000. Hand-knotted rugs start around $1,000 and can go up significantly depending on size, knot count, quality, and material.

Yes, if you value craftsmanship and uniqueness. Vintage rugs often appreciate over time, especially if they’re well-maintained and authentic.

Look for hand-knotted construction, uneven knots on the back, and natural dyes. Purchase from
reputable, experienced rug dealers.

A rug should be large enough so chairs remain on it when pulled out. Typically, this means adding at
least 24 inches to the dimensions of your table.

Yes! Layering rugs can add texture and visual interest. Use a larger neutral rug as a base and place a smaller patterned or colorful rug on top.

Choose rugs made of synthetic materials like polypropylene or nylon. Flat-weave rugs are ideal as they’re easier to clean and resist pet hair.

We strive to display the most accurate colors possible in our product images. However, because many of our items are handmade, and due to differences in device displays, colors, and patterns may vary slightly from the images shown. Pattern & photo ratio variations may also occur depending on the item's size and post-image editing.

Yes, but we highly recommend anyone interested in purchasing a rug come to our store and view the rug in person. In some cases, the rug colors shown in the product image may not appear exactly as the actual rug due to display differences and other variables.

If you’re local to the metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona area, we recommend that you come into our showroom to view the rug in person before purchasing. If that’s not possible or you’d prefer to order through our website, you’ll go through the normal shopping cart purchase process. During the checkout process, you’ll be offered several delivery/shipping options depending on if you’re local to the Phoenix area. If you are local, one of our rug technicians will deliver the rug to you (free delivery). If you are outside of the  local delivery area or you chose to have the rug delivered through a third-party shipping company (FedEx) instead of us, our website will calculate the cost of shipping including the required shipping insurance and any processing fees and will present you with a total
cost at the time of checkout.

Typically, on average, a rug pad or backing will last anywhere between 3-10 years before it will need to be replaced. The length of time will depend largely on several variable factors such as environment, foot traffic, abuse, ambient temperature, etc.

Rug backing is permanently attached to the bottom of a rug using a commercial or industrial adhesive. McFarlands Carpet Service uses a high-quality, premium adhesive that our competitors don't use. This allows our customers rug backing to last much longer than standard adhesives.

Custom Rug EdgingYes. Low-cost cutting fee and the cost of edging the rug depend on if you select narrow machine binding, wide machine binding, extra-wide machine binding, or machine serging.

Yes, we can either make your rug smaller or cut it and make it into multiple smaller rugs. This includes hand-knotted or woven rugs and carpet.

Yes. Regardless if it’s a hand-knotted, hand-woven, or machine-made rug, we have the ability to remove existing rug fringe and replace it with a finished edge of your choosing.

Rug Fringe ServicesYes, typically if you have a machine-made rug we can sew machine-made fringe onto the rug. This can also be done on hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs although it’s not recommended. This is the more affordable option. If you have a hand-knotted rug, we can create fringe (known as Sangiri), this process involves creating fringe from the foundation of the rug (generally cotton fiber). Our master rug weaver then secures the fringe. Keep in mind that this method depletes rows/lines of color so the rug's overall length will be shortened depending on the desired fringe length.

Yes, we can replace damaged binding, serging, fringing or add new edging.

Yes, we can fabricate just about any custom rug you can think of. Generally speaking, it’s very inexpensive to have a custom rug made, but it will depend on factors such as type, size, shape, material, edging type, etc.

Whether you have leftover carpet and need it made into custom rugs or are looking for a custom hand-knotted Persian rug in your own design, size, and shape, you're looking for a rug with your business logo on it, we've got you covered.

Call us at (602) 244-9329 or message us to discuss your dream rug and how we can help you make it happen.

No matter your rug needs, we can help.

For some services, we offer a "Rush" option for an additional small fee that can reduce the turn-around time if you must have your rugs returned by a specific date. In most cases a machine-made rug will have a label or tag attached to the underside of the rug that will provide information on the size, material and type of rug along with the rugs manufacturer. However, this is not always the case. Hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs will not have a tag or label on the underside of the rug.

Another common way to determine the difference between an authentic hand-knotted rug (like a Persian), or a machine-made rug is to look at the knots and any stitching. Hand-knotted rugs tend to have uneven, inconsistent knotting and fringe length whereas, a machine-made rug will have very uniform, even knots and any stitching will also be very uniform and even. Hand-knotted rugs should not have any stitching that appears to be from a sewing machine. If you see stitching like this it means your rug is most likely a machine-made rug.

Damaged Rug Repair Service

In most cases, we can repair or restore burns on rugs or holes in the rug.

Dampen the dented fibers and fluff them with a spoon or comb.

Yes, we can replace old rubber or cloth backing on a rug or add new backing to a rug that doesn't already have it.

Repair and restoration costs can vary widely depending on the age of the rug, the type of the rug, the material of the rug, the quality and detail of the rug, the type of repair needed, and other factors. Unfortunately it’s not possible to give an approximate amount due to each rug repair being unique to each rug.

No, we do not offer rug dying or re-coloring services for rugs. However, we can refer you to a qualified, professional, experienced rug colorer who may be able to assist you with your needs. We do offer spot recoloring for white knots that can appear on a hand-knotted rug.

The white spots you’re seeing are often due to wear over time. Hand-knotted rugs are woven on a foundation of warp and weft threads—usually white cotton. Short strands of pre-dyed wool or silk are tied onto this foundation to form the rug’s pile. As the rug ages and the pile wears down, the white cotton foundation threads—and especially the thicker knots where threads were joined during weaving—can start to show through. These small white spots are sometimes called “ricing” because they resemble grains of white rice.

This is a normal sign of age and use in many handmade rugs. While it can’t be permanently reversed without full reweaving, we do offer a touch-up service that can visually disguise the white spots. This process involves carefully matching the color of surrounding wool fibers and re-dyeing each white dot individually. It’s a time-intensive method but quite effective for improving appearance, at least until the rug is washed again or the dye naturally fades over time.

If you'd like to restore a more uniform look to your rug, our team can help. Reach out to schedule a consultation.

Open cuts on a rug's edge can cause it to unravel. Without proper binding to maintain tension, the rug's foundation weakens, and face yarns and fibers begin to shed. Rugs can be cut but they will need to be professionally re-edged to prevent them from eventually unraveling and becoming ruined.

Dry rot is the deterioration of a rug's foundation fibers, typically cotton but sometimes wool, jute, or silk. In severe cases, it results in a complete loss of structural integrity, causing the rug to disintegrate. When dry rot reaches this stage, as in this case, the textile is irreparably damaged.

Rugs with rubber, canvas, or cloth backings use latex glue for binding. This latex glue typically begins to deteriorate after about 10 years, becoming powdery and clumping. This powder eventually works its way onto your floor. If you notice white powder beneath your rug, it indicates the old backing needs replacement and should be brought to us for re-backing.
