Our Rug Cleaning Process
Not every rug will go through the exact same cleaning process outlined below. Each rug is unique, and factors such as age, fiber type, construction, condition, and level of soiling determine the most appropriate cleaning method. Some rugs may skip certain steps, require additional treatments, or follow an entirely different cleaning process altogether. Our rug cleaning experts carefully assess each rug and create a custom treatment plan tailored to its specific needs.
STEP 1
Initial Inspection
Rugs are carefully measured, inspected, and photographed to document any stains, damage, or special treatment needs. Each rug receives a custom cleaning strategy designed by our experienced rug care professional. All details are entered into a computerized system and assigned a unique barcode, allowing each department to track the rug’s progress and update its service record in real-time.
STEP 2
Rug Dusting
The rug is placed in a specialized dusting machine that gently tumbles it to remove dry contaminants such as sand, dust, dirt, allergens, and debris trapped deep within the fibers. This process is essential for loosening and removing particles that regular vacuuming cannot reach, ensuring a more effective and thorough cleaning in the next stages.
STEP 3
Pre-Rinsing
The rug is thoroughly saturated and flushed with clean water to rinse away surface grime, loose dirt, and remaining contaminants. This step helps to loosen embedded soils and prepares the rug for deeper, more effective cleaning in the next stage of the process.
STEP 4
Machine Washing
The rug is placed in a state-of-the-art industrial washing machine designed specifically for area rugs. Using water, specialized soaps, and proprietary cleaning agents, the machine gently agitates the rug to break down and remove embedded soil, sand, and contaminants—much like a washing machine does for clothing, but with a process tailored to protect delicate rug fibers and construction.
STEP 5
Stain & Dye Bleed Treatment
Rugs with tough stains, odors, or dye bleed issues receive targeted treatment using proprietary, specialized solutions. These carefully formulated products help break down stubborn contaminants and stabilize migrating dyes, ensuring the rug is both clean and visually restored without compromising its color or integrity.
STEP 6
Machine Scrubbing
Using an industrial floor scrubber with rotating brushes, our technicians deep-clean the rug with a blend of water, detergent, and other specialized cleaning agents. Multiple passes are made on both sides of the rug to effectively remove embedded soil, stains, oils, and other contaminants, ensuring a thorough and even clean.
STEP 7
Power Washing
The rug undergoes a high-pressure power washing using a combination of steam, water, and detergents. This process blasts away any remaining dirt, grime, and cleaning residues, reaching deep into the fibers to ensure a final, thorough rinse and deep clean.
STEP 8
Rug Conditioner & Deodorizer
A specialized liquid fiber conditioner is applied to restore the rug’s softness and flexibility, while a powerful industrial-grade deodorizer eliminates any lingering odors trapped within the fibers. This treatment bonds to the rug fibers, leaving them feeling supple and fresh with a clean scent that lasts well beyond the cleaning process.
STEP 9
Flush Rinse
The rug is thoroughly rinsed using a high-flow hose that floods it with cold, clean water. This deep flush is performed on both sides of the rug to remove any remaining cleaning agents, soil, or residues, ensuring the rug is completely clean and ready for the drying process.

Watch the Incredible Transformation of a Stained Area Rug – A True Deep Cleaning Success Story
In the rug cleaning videos below, you’ll see the step-by-step process our team used to restore a badly stained area rug brought to us after another rug cleaner failed to remove a large red drink stain. The customer had previously taken their rug to a local rug cleaning company, but the red dye stain remained—even after a full cleaning. Our professional rug cleaning experts went to work using advanced techniques to remove the stain, extract a surprising amount of embedded dirt and silt, and restore the rug to its original beauty. These videos show why we’re trusted for deep rug cleaning, stain removal, and area rug restoration. The results speak for themselves—and the customer couldn’t have been happier.
Protecting Your Rug Every Step of the Way
At McFarland’s Carpet Service, we take every precaution to ensure your rug is handled with the utmost care from start to finish. As part of our white glove service, every rug we clean or restore is professionally wrapped in heavy-duty plastic before delivery.
This protective wrapping shields your rug from moisture, dirt, and environmental contaminants during transport — helping to preserve the quality and cleanliness of your investment.
While this method is perfect for short-term protection, we always advise our customers to unroll and unwrap the rug as soon as possible after delivery. This allows the rug fibers to breathe naturally, helping prevent curling, mildew, or mold from forming during storage. If you’d like to store your rugs long-term, please call us and ask about our very affordable, professional long-term storage rug wrapping service.
It’s just one more way McFarland’s demonstrates our commitment to premium care, customer satisfaction, and attention to every detail.

Rug Cleaning & Care FAQ's
Can you clean rare museum quality, heirloom, antique or silk rugs?
Yes, we specialize in cleaning museum-quality, heirloom, high-end, hand-knotted, and silk rugs. Each rug is unique, so the cleaning process is tailored to its specific needs. After a thorough inspection by our rug cleaning experts, we create a customized cleaning plan to ensure the best results while safeguarding your rug against damage.
Do you offer rug protectant or moth inhibitor?
For a nominal fee, we provide rug protection treatment and moth-inhibiting treatments to safeguard your valuable
rugs. Our protection treatment enhances stain resistance and extends the time between professional cleanings.
Additionally, our moth-proofing treatment helps prevent moth infestations, protecting your rugs from damage. If you are planning on storing your rugs long-term, we highly recommend both treatments before placing them in storage.
Is it OK to use oxygenated (oxy) cleaning products on my rugs?
NO! You should NEVER use oxygenated products on your rugs. Rug fibers can have a negative chemical reaction and the cleaning product will permanently bleach or whiten the rug. If you’re unsure about cleaning your rug yourself, we highly recommend you take it to a rug cleaning professional. Even if you choose a rug cleaner other than us.
How often should I clean my rugs?
Rugs over time accumulate a lot of nasty things like bacteria, dead skin cells, pollen, viruses, parasites, and potentially harmful bacteria like E. coli, Staphylococcus, and Salmonella can thrive in carpets, often due to foot traffic, food spills, and pet activity. Dirty rugs can be a health hazard. On average, carpets can contain up to 200,000 bacteria per square inch—exceeding the levels found on toilet seats. In homes with pets, the bacteria count can be even higher. How often you should clean them depends on several variable factors such as foot traffic volume, type of foot traffic, pets, amount of dust in the home, rug material, children, and location of rug (bathrooms & kitchens tend to get dirtier faster). We recommend cleaning your rugs every 12-18 months on average. If you have other contributing factors such as high-traffic areas, pets, etc., we recommend more frequent cleaning between 9-12 months.
How often should I vacuum my rug?
Vacuum regularly (at least once a week for low-traffic areas; more often for high-traffic zones).
Can I machine-wash my rug?
Only small, lightweight rugs (e.g., cotton or synthetic) labeled "machine washable" can be safely machine-washed. Avoid washing wool, silk, or hand-knotted rugs this way.
How do I remove dust and allergens from my rug?
Vacuum thoroughly and shake the rug outdoors if possible. Consider using a HEPA filter vacuum or professional cleaning for deeper allergen removal.
How do I fix a rug damaged by water or flooding?
Remove the rug immediately to dry. Use a wet-dry vacuum to siphon as much water out of the rug fibers as possible. Lay it flat and use fans or a dehumidifier to speed up drying. Reach out to us to have the rug professionally cleaned.
How do I prevent pet hair from sticking to my rug?
Use a vacuum with a brush attachment designed for pet hair. Rubber brooms or lint rollers are also effective for manual removal.
How do I keep my rug from shedding?
Some shedding is normal for new rugs, especially wool. Vacuum gently with a brushless attachment. Avoid over-vacuuming and choose high-quality rugs to minimize shedding.
How do I protect my rug from moths?
Regularly clean the rug and use moth deterrents like cedar blocks, Have your rugs moth-proof or VECTRA treated after each cleaning.
How do I repair frayed edges on a rug?
Small frays can be trimmed and sealed with fabric glue. For extensive damage, consult a professional rug repair service.
How do I deal with curled edges on my rug?
Flatten curled edges by dampening them slightly and placing heavy books or furniture on top until they settle.
Is it OK to leave my cleaned rug in the cellophane wrapper and store it?
No, we do our best to remove all moisture from a rug after cleaning but inevitably some moisture sometimes remains. This moisture can cause mold on the rug if the rug is not unrolled and allowed to breathe. We recommend you unwrap your cleaned rug within a couple of days of getting it back home. If this isn’t possible, store the wrapped rug in a cool, dry location until it can be unwrapped. If
you need to store your rug long-term, we recommend you purchase our long-term storage rug wrapping service.
What vacuum settings should I use for rugs?
Use a lower suction setting for delicate rugs and avoid vacuums with beater bars on shag or high pile rugs.
Should I vacuum the back of the rug?
Yes, vacuum the rug's underside every few months to remove trapped dirt and debris.
Should I vacuum my rugs fringe?
No, the fringe may become lodged in the vacuum or the vacuum may rip the fringe from the rug. Fringe should only be professionally cleaned to avoid damaging the rug.
Can I air-dry my rug outside?
Yes, but avoid direct sunlight for long periods to prevent fading. Place the rug flat to avoid warping.
How can I protect rugs from future pet accidents?
Place rugs in less accessible areas or use pet-friendly stain-resistant rugs. If the pet is still receiving house training, roll up the rug and store it until house training is over.
What's the turn-around time to have my rugs serviced?
The amount of time to get your rugs serviced depends on several factors including the type of services you have requested, the number of services being completed on a rug, and the condition of the rug (some rugs require re-treatment) just to name a few. We always strive to complete rug services promptly but we refuse to skip on quality for the sake of expediency. For some services, we offer a "Rush" option for an additional small fee that can reduce the turn-around time if you must have your rugs returned by a specific date. Our average turn-around times are below but in some cases, the amount of time needed may be slightly longer or shorter than the average.
