Is Your Rug Looking a Little Worn Out?
Does It Have Pulls and Snags?
We Offer Professional Rug Shearing Services
Is your rug starting to look worn, with snags, pulls, or loose threads standing out? These common issues can be caused by everything from pet nails and high heels to vacuum brushes, heavy furniture, and everyday foot traffic. McFarlands Carpet Service offers expert rug shearing—a meticulous process that removes surface imperfections and restores your rug’s original, like-new appearance. Using a specialized power shearing tool, our skilled technicians carefully trim uneven fibers and fuzzing, leaving a clean, even surface that enhances both the look and feel of your rug.
This affordable service is ideal for refreshing high-traffic rugs or salvaging rugs that have been damaged by common wear-and-tear. Whether it’s an heirloom oriental or a contemporary area rug, shearing revives the pile and gives it a crisp, uniform texture—without harming the underlying fibers. Watch the video below to see how this simple yet effective process can breathe new life into your rug.
Expert Rug White Knot Removal & Recoloring
Restore Your Rug’s Flawless, Like-New Appearance Without Replacement
What Are White Knots?
Over time, hand-knotted rugs can develop small white spots or knots (sometimes referred to as freckling or freckles) that appear randomly throughout the rug. These white knots are the result of the weaving process: the cotton warp threads that form the rug’s foundation may become exposed as the surrounding wool fibers wear down. While they are a natural sign of craftsmanship, these spots can distract from your rug’s overall beauty.
Why They Occur
White knots typically appear as rugs age due to normal wear and tear. Other contributing factors include the original weaving process, the natural settling of fibers over time, and professional cleaning which can make the white threads more visible. These spots are not a structural problem, but they do affect the visual appeal of your rug.
How We Fix Them
Our white knot recoloring service addresses each exposed thread thread by thread, carefully matching the surrounding rug fibers to blend the spots seamlessly into the pattern. Using expert manual recoloring techniques, we restore the rug’s color consistency and give it an almost new appearance. While the treatment is not permanent, it typically lasts several years, and re-treatment can be performed as needed.

Rug Repair & Restoration FAQ's
Can you restore/repair a rug with a hole burned or torn in it?
In most cases, we can repair or restore burns on rugs or holes in the rug.
How do I restore a rug damaged by furniture dents?
Dampen the dented fibers and fluff them with a spoon or comb.
Can the rubber or cloth backing on my rug be replaced?
Yes, we can replace old rubber or cloth backing on a rug or add new backing to a rug that doesn't already have it.
How much does professional rug repair or restoration cost?
Repair and restoration costs can vary widely depending on the age of the rug, the type of the rug, the material of the rug, the quality and detail of the rug, the type of repair needed, and other factors. Unfortunately it’s not possible to give an approximate amount due to each rug repair being unique to each rug.
Do you offer rug dying or re-coloring services?
No, we do not offer rug dying or re-coloring services for rugs. However, we can refer you to a qualified, professional, experienced rug colorer who may be able to assist you with your needs. We do offer spot recoloring for white knots that can appear on a hand-knotted rug.
There are a bunch of little white dots/spots on my hand-knotted rug. Can you fix it?
The white spots you’re seeing are often due to wear over time. Hand-knotted rugs are woven on a foundation of warp and weft threads—usually white cotton. Short strands of pre-dyed wool or silk are tied onto this foundation to form the rug’s pile. As the rug ages and the pile wears down, the white cotton foundation threads—and especially the thicker knots where threads were joined during weaving—can start to show through. These small white spots are sometimes called “ricing” because they resemble grains of white rice.
This is a normal sign of age and use in many handmade rugs. While it can’t be permanently reversed without full reweaving, we do offer a touch-up service that can visually disguise the white spots. This process involves carefully matching the color of surrounding wool fibers and re-dyeing each white dot individually. It’s a time-intensive method but quite effective for improving appearance, at least until the rug is washed again or the dye naturally fades over time.

If you cut a rug, will it unravel?
Open cuts on a rug's edge can cause it to unravel. Without proper binding to maintain tension, the rug's foundation weakens, and face yarns and fibers begin to shed. Rugs can be cut but they will need to be professionally re-edged to prevent them from eventually unraveling and becoming ruined.
Why is my rug disintegrating?
Dry rot is the deterioration of a rug's foundation fibers, typically cotton but sometimes wool, jute, or silk. In severe cases, it results in a complete loss of structural integrity, causing the rug to disintegrate. When dry rot reaches this stage, as in this case, the textile is irreparably damaged.
What is the white dust under my rug?
Rugs with rubber, canvas, or cloth backings use latex glue for binding. This latex glue typically begins to deteriorate after about 10 years, becoming powdery and clumping. This powder eventually works its way onto your floor. If you notice white powder beneath your rug, it indicates the old backing needs replacement and should be brought to us for re-backing.
What's the turn-around time to have my rugs serviced?
The amount of time to get your rugs serviced depends on several factors including the type of services you have requested, the number of services being completed on a rug, and the condition of the rug (some rugs require re-treatment) just to name a few. We always strive to complete rug services promptly but we refuse to skip on quality for the sake of expediency. For some services, we offer a "Rush" option for an additional small fee that can reduce the turn-around time if you must have your rugs returned by a specific date. Our average turn-around times are below but in some cases, the amount of time needed may be slightly longer or shorter than the average.
