What’s the Difference Between Rug Serging and Rug Binding?
| Feature | Rug Serging | Rug Binding |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Rounded, yarn-wrapped edge that looks like a natural rug finish | Flat, fabric strip sewn along the edge |
| Common Uses | Hand-knotted, woven, and high-end rugs | Machine-made, commercial, and synthetic rugs |
| Customization | Huge variety of yarn colors and blends | Wide range of binding tapes and fabrics |
| Durability | Excellent when professionally applied | Also strong, but less “woven” appearance |
| Aesthetic Style | Traditional, artisan look | Modern, crisp finish |
| Cost | Slightly higher | Slightly lower |
Benefits of Rug Serging:
-
-
- Provides a clean, continuous edge that blends seamlessly with woven rugs
- Prevents unraveling and protects edges from fraying
- Offers hundreds of color and texture options
- Enhances the value and longevity of handmade or collectible rugs
- Ideal for antique and fine rugs
-
Drawbacks to Consider:
-
-
- Slightly higher cost than basic binding
- Not ideal for synthetic or low-pile rugs where binding may be better suited
-
When to Choose Binding Instead:
-
-
- You prefer a flat, modern look
- The rug will be used in high-traffic or commercial areas
- The rug is machine-made, or a lower value rug
- Cost is a consideration

Rug Edging & Serging FAQ's
I have carpet left over after my installation, can you cut it into custom rugs with finished edges?
Yes. Low-cost cutting fee and the cost of edging the rug depend on if you select narrow machine binding, wide machine binding, extra-wide machine binding, or machine serging.
If you don’t have scrap carpet of your own, we also carry a large selection of indoor and outdoor carpeting available for order.
Can you color match the rug edging to my rug?
You'll find a fantastic range of colors in our selection, giving you a great chance to find a shade that's just right. While a perfect match isn't always possible, we'll do our best to get you the closest option. Plus, you can browse our in-stock binding and serging threads to find the perfect complement.
I have a hand-knotted rug with fringe on the edge. Can you remove the fringe and replace it with a serged edge?
Yes. Regardless if it’s a hand-knotted, hand-woven, or machine-made rug, we have the ability to remove existing rug fringe and replace it with a finished edge of your choosing.
I have a rug with a finished edge. I’d like to add fringe to the edges. Can you add fringe to a rug that doesn’t have any?
Yes, typically if you have a machine-made rug we can sew machine-made fringe onto the rug. This can also be done on hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs although it’s not recommended. This is the more affordable option. If you have a hand-knotted rug, we can create fringe (known as Sangiri), this process involves creating fringe from the foundation of the rug (generally cotton fiber). Our master rug weaver then secures the fringe. Keep in mind that this method depletes rows/lines of color so the rug's overall length will be shortened depending on the desired fringe length.
Can the binding on my rug be replaced?
Yes, we can replace damaged binding, serging, fringing or add new edging.
Can I get a custom-made rug and is it expensive?
Yes, we can fabricate just about any custom rug you can think of. Generally speaking, it’s very inexpensive to have a custom rug made, but it will depend on factors such as type, size, shape, material, edging type, etc.
Whether you have leftover carpet and need it made into custom rugs or are looking for a custom hand-knotted Persian rug in your own design, size, and shape, you're looking for a rug with your business logo on it, we've got you covered.

No matter your rug needs, we can help.
What's the turn-around time to have my rugs serviced?
The amount of time to get your rugs serviced depends on several factors including the type of services you have requested, the number of services being completed on a rug, and the condition of the rug (some rugs require re-treatment) just to name a few. We always strive to complete rug services promptly but we refuse to skip on quality for the sake of expediency. For some services, we offer a "Rush" option for an additional small fee that can reduce the turn-around time if you must have your rugs returned by a specific date. Our average turn-around times are below but in some cases, the amount of time needed may be slightly longer or shorter than the average.

How do I know if my rug is a hand-knotted rug, or a machine-made rug?
In most cases a machine-made rug will have a label or tag attached to the underside of the rug that will provide information on the size, material and type of rug along with the rugs manufacturer. However, this is not always the case. Hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs will not have a tag or label on the underside of the rug.
Another common way to determine the difference between an authentic hand-knotted rug (like a Persian), or a machine-made rug is to look at the knots and any stitching. Hand-knotted rugs tend to have uneven, inconsistent knotting and fringe length whereas, a machine-made rug will have very uniform, even knots and any stitching will also be very uniform and even. Hand-knotted rugs should not have any stitching that appears to be from a sewing machine. If you see stitching like this it means your rug is most likely a machine-made rug.
Can you pickup & deliver the rugs, or make the changes to the rug/carpet in my home?
We apologize, we're not able to pick up the original carpet or rug for repairs only. If the rug is being cleaned by us, we can pick up and deliver, but only if cleaning is involved. We apologize for any inconvenience. In these cases, we ask that you please call us first to make sure that it's a request we can fulfill for you. If it is, we can schedule an appointment for you, or you can use our online automated scheduling system to make the appointment.
